Teaching Family Homes of Upper Michigan is a nonprofit agency in with offices throughout the Upper Peninsula working to match kids who need temporary homes with the families that can provide them. Right now, they have more kids than families.
Nearly 6,000 children in Michigan are in need of foster care. Many of them are between the ages of 8 and 17, including brothers and sisters of all racial and ethnic backgrounds.
Most of these children are survivors of abuse and neglect. Teaching Family Homes works to find them permanent homes, which can mean reuniting them with their own families, or finding adoptive families for them.
Your home may be just what they need until their permanent match is made. You do not have to own your own home or be married to be a foster family. You do need to be willing to love and care for the child like your own, provide a nurturing and safe environment for them for up to a year and a half, and be willing to help them transition to a permanent home when the time comes. Foster families are trained and screened thoroughly before they are licensed and approved.
